Alfonzo checked his messages. There were a few he read that brought his mouth into a twist. Sal, for starters asked when he was coming home and what’s the deal with him taking off? The boy had a warped sense of authority if he believed a father must answer to his son. Once he got home he’d set the punk straight.

Anyway, the plane ride home seemed longer. Maybe, he wanted to get there so bad, eagerness caused a lag in time. Now that he reached Sicily, he chose to go take Nico a gift before chilling for a bit. Then he received a call from Lorenzo and he readied for news that might help give Shanda and Giuseppe a break. “Talk to me Lo’?”

“I’ve spoken with Asante and he filled me in on his adoption by the Princessa and her back story history. She also has a name.”

“I’m listening,” Alfonzo said as the vehicle moved unimpeded through the streets.

“Her name is Renalda…her father Triano was a Viscount…”

Alfonzo watched the landscape, nodding during Lorenzo’s play-by-play. On occasion the sensual mouth frowned; on another he snickered. One dark brow cut a line on his forehead and he even scratched his balls from time to time. Getting antsy, cooped up in cars or on the jet too long, he needed some loving and knew he’d get some when he got home. But, he listened to his Cousin Lorenzo—the dude came through once left to do shit without someone breathing down his neck.

“The Viscount was Sergio Giacanti’s half-brother. Seems it wasn’t a secret then or that they had bad blood. The Viscount lost a card game and rumor is he had to sign over a deed to his prized villa to settle the wager. I am told he squandered his inheritance, leaving the family destitute and it seems his daughter blames the Giacanti’s for her father’s misfortune.”

“What’s new?” Alfonzo quipped. Apparently, the past wouldn’t die and old family drama kept trying to steal any bit of his present happiness. He leaned a shoulder on the door. The action eased a portion of the emotional weight.

“Renalda has fled Eritrea after her daughter set fire to her home. Her daughter and husband died in the fire…seems Renalda has many tragic problems.”

She sure did have 99 problems and likely caused every one!

“Yeah, she probably set the fire. I wouldn’t be surprised if she killed her own daughter.”

“Asante is convinced she is responsible. He says Renalda’s daughter helped him escape. But she refused to leave with him.”

“Do you believe the guy?”

“So far what he says has checked out.”

“That’s not what I asked you?” Alfonzo’s armpits tingled and he removed his suit jacket and activated the air-conditioning.

“Our people are searching for her. In the meantime, I am following another lead. The woman from the press conference was paid by someone named Viglio Citti.”

“Viglio Citti…never heard of him.”

“He’s a small time loan shark. Figured you wouldn’t. He doesn’t have rank among the families…I will pay him a visit tonight after I question the woman.
